A white car crashed into a crowd of pedestrians near Tiergarten park in Berlin on Saturday during the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade. At least one person was killed in the attack, with 17 others seriously injured. German authorities reported the incident.
The driver hit several pedestrians before the vehicle struck a tree. He then fled on foot. According to the newspaper Bild, citing witnesses, the man was reportedly armed with a knife. A police spokesman said the suspect was known to investigators and comes from the city's Islamist milieu. Whether an arrest was made remained unclear initially.
The GSG 9 special operations unit of the federal police was also deployed in the search. The organisers ended the event, and police called on participants to leave the area. More than 2,200 officers were deployed after security measures had been strengthened.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the "terrible act" would be clarified and the perpetrator held accountable. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner wrote on platform X that the city had been "attacked in the most cruel way".
