Berlin: 68-year-old man charged with at least 22 rapes
The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against a 68-year-old man accused of at least 22 rapes of 14 women. According to the authorities, the suspect allegedly incapacitated his victims before the crimes with a mixture of sleeping tablets and alcohol. The women only became aware of the offences during the course of the investigation.
According to the charge sheet, the man selected his victims through online dating websites. The alleged crimes were also filmed. In addition to the rape charges, he is also accused of aggravated assault and the illegal recording of the attacks.
Police were able to identify the suspect through a video that he had passed on to an acquaintance himself. This acquaintance was already being monitored for similar offences. The 68-year-old has been in remand custody since March.
The Public Prosecutor's Office believes there are a total of 58 victims. However, not all of them have been identified yet, and the investigation is ongoing. In one case, in which a woman was allegedly raped 36 times between 2010 and 2014, the proceedings had to be discontinued due to the statute of limitations.
