In the German capital, a man armed with a weapon has taken a woman hostage in a supermarket. The incident occurred late Friday evening at a shop on Hildegard-Jaeger-Straße in the Marzahn district in south-east Berlin.
The hostage-taking began shortly after 22:00 local time. Strong police forces then arrived and cordoned off the area around the supermarket widely. The armed man remains inside the shop and is in contact with the authorities, according to investigators.
Police spokesperson Stefan Petersen-Sumann told the German Press Agency (dpa) that officers are on site and the operation is ongoing. Further details could not be released at present, as the situation continues to be classified as particularly critical.
The perpetrator's motives and further details about the condition of the hostage are not yet known. Police are conducting negotiations with the hostage-taker and attempting to resolve the situation peacefully.
