Berlin: Hostage-taker overpowered after more than 11 hours
Specialist units of the Berlin police freed a woman on Saturday morning who had been held hostage by a man since Friday evening in a supermarket. The incident occurred in the Marienfelde district.
The perpetrator attacked the cashier at around 22:15 on Friday in the shop. He drew a large knife and seized the woman. While most other employees were able to flee, the member of staff at the till remained trapped. A witness told news agency dpa that she was "simply in the wrong place at the wrong time".
Police immediately launched a large-scale operation and surrounded the building. After more than eleven hours, specialist forces entered the shop through a roof window. In doing so, they used a Taser to overpower the hostage-taker. They subsequently arrested him. The hostage remained uninjured.
