A 41-year-old medical doctor from the German capital was sentenced on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, in a Berlin courtroom to life imprisonment and a permanent ban from practising medicine. According to Fakt.pl, the man must be placed in preventive detention after serving his sentence.
The judges found the defendant guilty of murdering fifteen people. Twelve women and three men fell victim to the serial killer. The youngest of the victims was only 25 years old, the oldest 94. Although all patients were in serious health conditions, they were not dying, as the court emphasised.
The convicted man committed the murders during home visits, in which he administered lethal drug mixtures to the affected individuals. After the acts, he repeatedly set fires to cover his tracks. These acts of arson initially triggered an extensive investigation into killings in connection with fire.
In August 2024, officers arrested the doctor. After months of silence, the defendant confessed to his guilt at the end of June. In court, he claimed to have convinced himself that his actions were justified because he was sparing the patients "suffering and helplessness". At the end of the trial, he asked the relatives of the victims for forgiveness.
A specialist investigation team from the Berlin state criminal office evaluated hundreds of medical documents. In April 2025, prosecutors brought charges for fifteen murders. The authority is already conducting further investigations in no fewer than 76 additional cases – this could become one of the largest cases of its kind in German history.
