German police freed a woman on Saturday morning who a man had held hostage for more than eleven hours in a supermarket in Berlin. The suspect was overpowered and arrested during the operation, according to German media reports.
According to police, the man took the woman hostage on Friday at around 22:30 in a supermarket in the Berlin district of Marienfelde.
Police launched a major operation around the shop. On Saturday morning, the hostage was finally freed. "The perpetrator was overpowered, the hostage freed," a police spokesman said, according to the German news agency dpa.
As the newspaper Bild reports, specialist units stormed into the shop through a skylight and overpowered the suspect. A stun gun is said to have been used in the process.
An employee told journalists according to dpa that the man had drawn a large knife shortly before the shop closed. Most of the staff present in the shop managed to escape, but not a cashier, whom the attacker took hostage. She was "simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."
