A 68-year-old man from the capital faces trial. He is accused of numerous sexual assaults that he allegedly committed after making contact through dating portals.
Berlin pensioner accused of drugging and raping 14 women
A 68-year-old man from Berlin must answer to a German court. The prosecution accuses him of sexually abusing more than a dozen women after meeting them through online dating platforms.
The alleged offences took place in the accused man's own flat. To make the women compliant, he is said to have added sedatives to their drinks and also given them alcohol. In a disoriented state, the women were allegedly abused.
Particularly serious: the pensioner is said to have recorded the assaults with a camera. To date, the victims have no memory of the events.
Investigators put the man on their radar following a raid on his flat. There they discovered digital storage media containing numerous recordings of sexual offences. Berlin investigators received leads on the suspect from Lower Saxony, where another man was being investigated for similar crimes. Apparently there was contact between the two suspects.
The first search took place in spring of the previous year. About twelve months later, in March of the current year, a second search followed. Following this, the 68-year-old was taken into custody and has been in detention since.
In total, investigators identified 58 women who could be involved in the case. Whether further offences have been committed is still being investigated.
In 36 additional alleged cases, however, the prosecution had to discontinue the investigation. These assaults are said to have taken place between 2010 and 2014 and are now statute-barred under criminal law.
