The Berlin prosecutor's office has brought charges against a 68-year-old man. He is accused of at least 22 rapes of 14 women. He is also accused of filming the assaults and causing the victims serious bodily injuries.
The accused has been in pre-trial detention since March. According to the charging document, the man selected his potential victims through online dating platforms. He subsequently incapacitated the women with a mixture of sedatives and alcohol. The victims only learned of the crimes in the course of the investigation.
The police were able to identify the suspect through a video that he himself had forwarded to an acquaintance. This acquaintance was already under surveillance for similar crimes.
The prosecutor's office assumes a total of 58 victims. However, not all have been identified yet, and the investigation is ongoing.
In one case, proceedings had to be discontinued. A woman who allegedly was raped by the man 36 times between 2010 and 2014 fell within the statute of limitations.
