Fraudsters steal money from 79-year-old in East Frisia
A 79-year-old woman from Ihlow in Aurich district has fallen victim to a scam similar to the grandchild trick. Unknown perpetrators posed as employees of software company Microsoft and tricked the pensioner out of a three-figure sum of money.
The fraud began with a manipulated screen on the woman's computer. It displayed an alleged lock message with a telephone number listed on it. The victim called this number and was persuaded by the perpetrators to grant them remote access to her device. Through this connection, the fraudsters managed to withdraw money from her bank account.
After the 79-year-old discovered the damage, she filed a criminal complaint with the police. Investigations into the perpetrators are ongoing. Authorities regularly warn about this form of computer fraud, in which alleged technical support staff convince older people that their computer is infected with viruses.
