A man from the Heidekreis district in Lower Saxony has fallen victim to a sophisticated fraud and lost more than €70,000. The criminals employed a combination of deceptively authentic emails and fake telephone calls.
Initially, the victim received a message claiming to come from his own financial institution. The recipient was told he needed to renew his internet banking login. By clicking an embedded link, he was directed to a fake service page. Shortly afterwards, someone called him on the telephone – the official bank number appeared on his screen. Even security software installed on his mobile device classified the call as secure.
The caller spoke of allegedly unusual transfers from abroad and guided the victim through what appeared to be a reversal transaction in his banking application. Only later did the man realise that in fact rapid payments had been withdrawn from his account. The damage amounts to approximately €70,000.
Officers in Delmenhorst are warning against this new method of operation. Similar cases have been increasing recently. Another victim from Wesermarsch also lost several thousand euros after being persuaded to update his online banking login details.
