The Bad Tölz municipal utility company is warning of a current telephone fraud scheme. Unknown individuals are contacting households in the region and claiming to work for the municipal utility company. In conversations, they claim to want to discuss an alleged tariff change and ask for the meter number.

The company makes clear that these calls do not come from its employees. The utility company does not generally call its customers in order to request such data. Anyone who receives a request over the phone to provide the number of their electricity or gas meter should be suspicious.

The utility company suspects deliberate conduct behind the scheme: with the stolen meter number, the perpetrators could prepare an unauthorised switch of energy supplier. Such provider changes without the consumer's knowledge are a recurring problem in the energy market.

Those affected should not provide any information and report the incident to the police. A direct enquiry with Bad Tölz municipal utility company itself can also provide clarity.
