A man from Bielefeld filed a report with police on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, after falling victim to an online fraud. The perpetrator had posed as a young woman on a social network and initiated contact with him.
After the communication moved to a messaging service, she sent him photos that she claimed showed her. Over several weeks, the two exchanged messages daily. At the end of June, the unknown woman then asked the Bielefeld man to send her a gift card.
After the victim complied with the request, the fraudster continually demanded further cards. The man eventually recognised the scam and contacted police.
Investigations into the case are ongoing. Officers are warning against so-called romance scams, in which perpetrators deliberately evoke feelings in order to obtain money or valuables.
