The top chief of the German federal police for crime prevention, Holger Münch, has expressed concern about an emerging group of perpetrators. In an interview with Berlin newspaper WELT, he reported on a young generation of offenders, for which he coined the term "Generation-Z Mafia".
Münch, who heads the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), also described how pistols and rifles are brought from Turkey across borders to Europe using skilful tactics. Turkey serves as a central point of origin and transit country for illegal weapons and military goods reaching the continent.
Another issue occupying the police chief is the activity of foreign intelligence services on German territory. He sees the operations of foreign agents within the country as an additional risk to internal security.
The statements of the BKA president make clear that criminal networks are changing and becoming younger. The designation "Generation-Z Mafia" shows that even age groups traditionally not in the focus of organised crime are increasingly appearing. The combination of weapons smuggling, juvenile gang structures and foreign espionage marks a broad spectrum of challenges for German security authorities.
