Non-ferrous metal theft in Thuringia: One arrested, five others on the run
A company in Fambach in Schmalkalden-Meiningen district became the target of a break-in during the night leading into Monday. The perpetrators stole metal worth more than 200,000 euros, including specialist tools.
When a patrol spotted the getaway vehicles heading in the direction of Schmalkalden, the drivers attempted to escape. The flight ended for one vehicle. Two occupants got out and ran away. Officers were able to apprehend one of them. The 23-year-old was taken into custody on the same day.
A second getaway car was stopped in Mittelstille. The occupants fled on foot in the direction of an industrial estate. Eyewitnesses later reported two of the wanted individuals in Steinbach-Hallenberg. A helicopter supported the search operation.
The recovered haul was returned to the affected company. The search for the five remaining suspects is ongoing. Police are accepting tip-offs.
