German police are investigating a new alleged act of sabotage on a main railway line that disrupted traffic and for which a far-left group has claimed responsibility.

On Friday morning, technicians discovered a fire in a cable duct near Leverkusen railway station, a city near Cologne. This emerged from a police statement published on Saturday afternoon, as LRT.lt reports.
The property damage caused disruptions to operations of railway company Deutsche Bahn on this heavily used line in North Rhine-Westphalia, the country's most densely populated region.
"Investigators currently assume that the fire was deliberately set," the police explained. At the same time, the authority appealed to possible witnesses requesting information.
Meanwhile, a group calling itself "Kommando Angry Birds" published a statement of responsibility on the far-left internet platform Indymedia on Saturday morning. In it, the group claimed to be "responsible for the sabotage of the railway line north of Leverkusen".
The German rail network, which already suffers from decades of underinvestment, has faced an increasing number of acts of sabotage in recent months, most of which remain unsolved.
Germany has heightened vigilance in view of sabotage attempts, disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, which are primarily attributed to Russia.
