A 41-year-old German doctor has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Berlin for the murder of 15 patients. The court found him guilty of killing 12 women and 3 men between September 2021 and July 2024 – as reported by the BBC and DW.
The judges ordered preventive detention to follow the sentence due to the exceptional gravity of the offence. The man was also permanently banned from practising medicine. The convicted man did not appear at the sentencing, whereupon the court ordered his immediate arrest.
Investigators believe the death toll will rise significantly. The public prosecutor is currently reviewing 76 additional similar cases. Should these also be proven, it would constitute one of the largest serial murders in post-war German history.
The known victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 years old. All suffered from severe, incurable illnesses, but their deaths were not imminent at the time of the offences. According to the charges, the doctor broke into patients' homes and administered lethal mixtures of sedatives to them without their consent, including anaesthetics and muscle relaxants. These substances paralyse the respiratory muscles and lead to respiratory arrest and death within minutes.
On at least five occasions, the medical practitioner subsequently set fires to cover his tracks. In July 2024, shortly before his arrest, he killed two people in a single day: first a 75-year-old man, then a 76-year-old woman a few hours later. He also attempted unsuccessfully to set her house on fire.
During the trial, which lasted over a year, the defendant remained largely silent. Only a month ago, he broke his silence and confessed to killing twelve severely ill patients. In court, he stated that he had convinced himself that he was relieving people of their suffering. "I believed all this time that this was the best solution for everyone," he said, and apologised for the suffering he had caused.
