Police in Bavaria have launched an investigation into an attack on Welfen Gymnasium in Sonthofen, south-west of Munich. During the incident on Wednesday afternoon (08.07.2026), four people were injured. A family dispute is suspected as a possible motive.
The alleged perpetrator is a 16-year-old who entered the school building armed with a knife and a firearm. He severely injured two 13-year-old female pupils with the knife. Both girls are being treated in hospital and are not in life-threatening condition.
The teenager attempted to flee but was arrested shortly afterwards at a nearby sports centre. Investigators believe he had no accomplices.
At the scene of the crime, a large police operation was conducted with hundreds of officers, rescue workers and six helicopters, as initial information indicated that shots had been fired at the school. A helicopter was eventually used to transport the injured.
Police investigations are focusing on whether a family conflict was the trigger for the attack. Further details about the teenager's background and the exact circumstances of the attack are still being investigated.
