Germany: Neo-Nazi trans woman transferred to men's prison
Marla-Svenja Liebich, 55, formerly known as Sven Liebich, has been transferred to a men's prison in the Free State of Saxony following her arrest in Czechia. The decision was made by specialists in consultation with the judicial authorities, as announced by the Saxon Justice Ministry.
Liebich, a figure known in far-right circles in eastern Germany for decades, was arrested in early July in western Bohemia under a European arrest warrant. She had evaded custody in August of the previous year after failing to serve an 18-month prison sentence for incitement to hatred.
At the end of 2024, Liebich changed her legal gender to "female" following the passage of a self-determination law by the traffic-light government under Olaf Scholz. This measure was viewed at the time as an attempt to mock the German Transsexual Act. The current government under Friedrich Merz has announced it will review this law.
Liebich was initially placed in the women's prison in Chemnitz but was later transferred to a men's facility. Saxony's Justice Minister Constanze Geier stated it was good that the facility had resolved the matter quickly.
