Berlin accuses Moscow over drone incident in Leipzig

The German federal government is set to characterise the drone incident in Leipzig as an attempted attack by Moscow and Russian secret services, according to a report by BILD cited by Naftemporiki.

Within the day, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Jochen Wantfal are expected to provide additional information at a press conference. Chancellor Friedrich Merz will not attend. Countermeasures against Russia will be coordinated with European partners.

The episode concerns a drone armed with explosives, which was detected among Ukrainian transport aircraft of the Antonov type. Chancellor Merz had stated last week that those responsible "will pay for it".

The Wall Street Journal reported that American secret services also directly link Russia to the incident, which is being treated as an "attempted attack". "The key is to have the necessary evidence or a very strong suspicion", Interior Minister Dobrindt had said when asked about a potential German response.

Playing a parallel role in the climate of concern is also the discovery of an underground cache containing weapons and ammunition near a lake outside Berlin. The case is being investigated by the Federal Prosecutor with the suspicion of "preparation of serious acts of violence against the state".
