A 29-year-old held a woman captive in a supermarket in Berlin-Steglitz for over eleven hours. The prosecution now wants to bring him into pre-trial detention.

In a shop in the south of the capital, an employee fell into the hands of a man on Friday evening. The 29-year-old is alleged to have threatened the woman with a blade and held her overnight. Only the following morning did police free the hostage. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports that the judiciary has now applied for an arrest warrant on charges of extortionate abduction.
The responsible judge was to decide on pre-trial detention on Sunday itself. During the rescue operation, officers used a Taser to stop the suspect. Neither the woman nor the arrested man sustained significant injuries in the process.
Initially, the authority had mistakenly reported that the perpetrator was of Turkish origin. Later it corrected this information: the suspect holds German citizenship.
