Another operation targeting Germany's largest credit institution: on Tuesday, officers from the Frankfurt prosecutor's office stormed office spaces in the banking district. The retail banking floors in the distinctive twin towers on Taunusanlage were specifically affected. The group's headquarters was not searched, according to a spokesman for the authority. A judge had already approved the operation in June.
The institution itself declined to comment. When contacted, a press spokesman refused to provide any information. Economic journalists report, however, that the operation served to secure evidence in an individual case. An employee is suspected of embezzling customer funds. The trial before the Frankfurt Regional Court is scheduled to begin in August.
According to investigations, the authorities became aware of the case through an internal alert issued by the bank itself. Charges were filed as early as February. The suspect is alleged to have transferred financial assets to an account he operated under the name of his mother-in-law. The institution declined to comment on these claims.
Such incidents are not uncommon at the Frankfurt money house. Just in January this year, federal criminal police officers had conducted searches of offices in the Main metropolis and the capital on the prosecutor's orders. At that time, suspicion of money laundering was involved, linked to foreign corporate structures. Suspicious transfers are said to have gone unnoticed for a long time.
In 2022 alone there were three raids – among other things on suspicion of environmental fraud at the fund subsidiary, a money laundering allegation, and dividend tax fraud.
