Driver deliberately drives into group of people – police open fire
Shortly before midnight in Neustadt am Rübenberge, a blue BMW deliberately drove into a group of people, injuring five individuals. The driver fled on foot after police fired on the vehicle. According to de.euronews.com, some victims were seriously injured, others slightly; none are in life-threatening condition.
Police refer to an "attack with a vehicle". A video of approximately eight minutes documents a confrontation between several people, two car attacks, gunshots and further confrontations. A police spokesperson announced that "every shot, every movement of persons, camera recordings" would be evaluated.
The investigation team assumes that the victims and perpetrator knew each other and that the vehicle was deliberately driven into the group. Hanover police classify the act as part of clan-related crime: "The individuals involved in the act belong to large families, some of whom have already come to police attention in connection with clan-related crime." A police helicopter was deployed in the search but initially failed to locate the driver.
On Tuesday, police reported the arrest of three people, but denied this claim on Wednesday. Instead, the arrest of a suspect was announced without providing further details. Several police officers were in the immediate vicinity as traffic checks were being carried out.
