The Frankenthal Regional Court ordered a woman from Wuppertal to refund nearly 6,000 euros that her ex-boyfriend had fraudulently transferred to her account. The court held her responsible as the account holder.

Woman Held Liable for Ex-Partner's Online Fraud
According to swr.de, the Frankenthal Regional Court has ruled that a woman from Wuppertal must pay for the fraud committed by her ex-boyfriend. The woman had given him her bank card because he claimed to be experiencing financial difficulties. The man later impersonated a bank employee to a man from Grünstadt, obtained his banking details through deception, and transferred nearly 6,000 euros to the account of his then-girlfriend.
The defrauded man from Grünstadt demanded the money back in court. The Regional Court ordered the account holder to pay the 6,000 euros. The reasoning: as the account holder, she must be treated as if she had known that the money had been obtained criminally.
The woman claimed in the trial that she knew nothing of the fraud. Her ex-boyfriend had already withdrawn and spent the money. This means the ruling is binding for her – despite the fact that she was not the perpetrator herself.
