In the Berlin district of Marienfelde, a hostage situation occurred in a Rewe supermarket on late Friday evening. An unknown perpetrator held a woman there and threatened her. Police officers then negotiated with him for several hours.
The incident began around 10 pm. The man gained access to the woman and held her against her will. Throughout the entire incident, police maintained contact with him. The following morning, shortly after 9:30 am, the SEK special unit intervened. Officers used electric stun devices to overpower the perpetrator. Subsequently, they brought the abducted woman to safety.
According to statements from police spokesman Florian Nath, the hostage-taker made various requests during the operation. What specific demands he made and what motivated him to commit the act were not disclosed by investigators. The name of the arrested man was initially not made public.
The area around the supermarket was cordoned off during the operation. Officers assured residents in the neighbourhood that there was no danger to them. In addition to police, paramedics and the fire service were present.
An employee of the store reported to journalists that the freed person was a member of the market's staff. She had simply been unlucky to be there at an inopportune moment. The police would neither confirm nor deny this account, citing ongoing investigations.
