Special units of the Berlin police freed a woman on Saturday morning who had been held hostage for more than eleven hours by a man in a supermarket in the capital. Officers overpowered the suspect during the operation and arrested him.
The incident occurred in a supermarket in the Berlin district of Marienfelde. According to police, the man took the woman hostage on Friday evening shortly after 10 p.m. The authorities then launched a large-scale operation around the shop. The hostage was freed only the following morning.
"The perpetrator was overpowered, the hostage freed," a police spokesman told the German news agency (dpa). According to the newspaper Bild, specialist forces entered the shop through a roof window and brought the suspect under control. In doing so, they apparently used a Taser.
An employee told journalists that the man had drawn a large knife shortly before the shop closed. Most people present in the shop managed to escape, but not the cashier, whom the attacker took hostage. The witness said she was "simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."
