A man is holding a woman hostage in a supermarket in the Berlin district of Marienfelde. The incident occurred on late Friday evening, shortly after 22:00. Since then, the police have been conducting an extensive operation.
"He is still in the shop. We have officers on site. The operation is ongoing," a police spokesman said early Saturday morning to the German Press Agency (dpa). The officers are in contact with the perpetrator and are endeavouring to resolve the situation peacefully. His motives are unknown so far.
The supermarket is located on Hildburghauser Straße in the southern district of Marienfelde. The surrounding area has been cordoned off over a wide perimeter. Police vehicles, ambulances and heavily armed specialist forces are visible on site.
According to residents, the shop manager should have seen a weapon, as the newspaper Bild reports. The police have not confirmed these claims so far. There is no information available about the health condition of the hostage.
