A man held a cashier hostage for more than eleven hours in a Berlin supermarket. Specialist officers stormed the shop and arrested the suspect using a Taser.
Hostage-taker in Berlin supermarket overpowered after eleven hours
German police officers freed a woman on Saturday morning who had been held hostage for more than eleven hours by a man in a supermarket in the Berlin district of Marienfelde. The suspect was overpowered and arrested during the operation, according to German media reports.
According to police, the attacker seized the woman on Friday evening shortly after 10 p.m. in the shop. Officers immediately launched a large-scale operation around the market. On the following morning, the woman was freed. "The perpetrator was overpowered, the hostage rescued", a police spokesman told the German news agency dpa.
According to the newspaper Bild, specialist units entered the shop through a skylight and brought the suspect under control. In doing so, they allegedly used a Taser.
An employee told journalists from dpa that the man had drawn a large knife shortly before closing time. Most of the staff managed to escape, but the cashier could not – the attacker took her hostage. According to the witness, she was simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time".
