A woman from Gifhorn district has been defrauded of a five-figure sum of money in a fraud attempt via an internet sales platform. The criminals had posed as potential buyers for an item the woman was offering for sale.
According to police, the perpetrators initially suggested paying through supposedly secure services. In the course of events, they then claimed there was a problem with the original payment method and recommended an alternative system. Through a corresponding link, the victim reached a deceptively authentic-looking website. There she was supposed to enter her bank details or link them to the purported payment service.
The fraudsters subsequently misused the information obtained in this way to withdraw money. The exact amount of damage is in the five-figure range.
Police are warning of this method: criminals pose as buyers on platforms such as Kleinanzeigen.de and lure sellers to fake payment pages. Bank details are harvested there and used for unauthorised transactions.
