On Wednesday afternoon, 8 July, a serious incident occurred at the Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau. A 16-year-old entered the school armed with a knife and a firearm. Teachers and officers who arrived at the scene managed to overpower and arrest the attacker.
Several people were injured in the attack. According to police statements, among the severely injured are at least two 13-year-old girls who were taken to hospital. Whether they sustained injuries that posed an acute risk to life was initially unknown. The total number of injured and the exact extent of the injuries remained unclear for the time being. A spokesman for the emergency services cited a single-digit number.
Police arrived at the scene with a large deployment and advised the public to avoid the school grounds. A counselling centre was set up at the fire station for affected families. It was initially unclear whether the arrested person was a student at the educational institution.
Schongau is located on the Lech in western Upper Bavaria and has approximately 12,000 residents. The gymnasium is situated close to the old town and has around 800 pupils. There are further schools in the neighbourhood. In Bavaria, the school year ends soon; most pupils will receive their end-of-year reports on 31 July.
