Two girls were attacked by a teenager at the Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau, a municipality in southern Bavaria. They sustained significant injuries and had to be taken to hospital. According to police, they are now in a stable condition.
The incident occurred on the school premises. How many people in total were injured and the severity of the injuries are still being investigated. Emergency services were deployed in considerable numbers and advised the public to avoid the area. A point of contact was set up at the fire station for those affected and their families.
The alleged attacker was arrested. According to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, the 16-year-old is of Croatian origin and had been living with his parents. He may have previously attended this educational institution, but this has not yet been confirmed. He had previously received psychiatric care.
Whether there was a personal relationship between the young man and the two injured girls remains unclear. The minister said there were no concrete indications of this. It now needs to be investigated whether the victims were deliberately selected or happened to be present.
Schongau is located on the Lech and has approximately 12,000 inhabitants.
