A 33-year-old German who opened fire on a man in Cologne, seriously injuring him, has been arrested in Hungary.

Special units of the Hungarian riot police and the counter-terrorism unit TEK arrested a 33-year-old German national in Budapest on 10 June. The suspect is believed to have fired multiple shots at a person in the early morning of 31 May in the German city of Cologne. The victim suffered severe, life-threatening wounds.
After the incident, the man with the initials K. M. A. fled and evaded prosecution. German investigators launched an intensive search for him and issued a European arrest warrant. On 10 June, German authorities informed the international centre for crime cooperation of the Hungarian police (NEBEK) that the wanted man might be in the Hungarian capital.
Officers from the Hungarian criminal investigations department established the man's exact location in the 8th district of Budapest within a few hours. With the support of the TEK operations unit, the fugitive gunman was arrested and subsequently handed over to the local police station.
NEBEK took over coordination of the cross-border cooperation and is now preparing the suspect's extradition to the German judicial authorities. According to the Hungarian police's assessment, the swift arrest highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation between investigative authorities.
