Munich's Higher Regional Court has sentenced an Iraqi couple, who were members of the terrorist organisation "Islamic State" (IS), to life imprisonment. The pair had held two minor girls from the Yazidi minority as slaves. The ruling is reported by newsit.gr.

The convicted pair, a man with the initials T.H.S. and a woman with the initials A.R.A., were in an IS-controlled region on the border between Iraq and Syria between 2015 and 2017. There they first abducted a five-year-old girl and later a twelve-year-old girl, both members of the Yazidi minority.

The children lived as slaves in the couple's household. According to the court, the man repeatedly raped both victims, whilst the woman prepared the room and sedated the children. The woman also deliberately inflicted burns on the children and forced them, as punishment, to stand on one leg for hours.

The court found that the perpetrators forced the victims to adopt the ideology of the terrorist organisation. The couple was convicted, amongst other charges, of complicity in genocide, crimes against humanity and enslavement of minors.

After IS's defeat in the region in 2017, the two defendants left Syria but did not release the girls. Instead, they handed them over to other members of the organisation. In April 2024, they were arrested in Bavaria, where they faced charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
