Life sentence for ISIS couple for enslavement of Yazidi children in Munich
The Munich Regional Court of Appeal sentenced an Iraqi couple who had belonged to the terrorist militia Islamic State to life imprisonment. The pair held two Yazidi girls as slaves between 2015 and 2017, sexually abused them and systematically tortured them.
Life sentence for ISIS couple for enslavement of Yazidi children
The Munich Regional Court of Appeal imposed life sentences against an Iraqi couple who, as members of the terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS), held two Yazidi children as slaves and subjected them to brutal mistreatment.
The convicted couple lived in the IS-controlled region between Iraq and Syria during the years 2015 to 2017. There they first abducted a five-year-old girl, and later a twelve-year-old also fell into their hands. Both children had to live as slaves of the couple and were victims of physical violence and sexual abuse. They were also forced to adopt the ideology of the terrorist group.
According to the court, the man repeatedly raped the two girls, whilst his wife prepared a room and threatened the victims with a knife. The woman also intentionally caused burn injuries to the children and forced them as punishment to stand on one leg for hours.
The couple were convicted of, among other offences, membership of a terrorist association, complicity in genocide and exploitation of minors. After IS was driven out of the region in 2017, the two left Syria, but did not free the girls; instead they handed them over to other members of the organisation.
In April 2024 they were arrested in Bavaria. They were charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
