A Berlin court sentenced a 41-year-old doctor to life imprisonment who has been held responsible for the deaths of 15 patients. The prosecution is simultaneously examining whether the same person is connected to dozens of additional deaths.
The court found the man, identified by German media as Johannes M., guilty of the murder of 12 women and 3 men. These acts are said to have taken place between September 2021 and July 2024.
According to the charges, the doctor visited patients in their homes and administered to them a lethal combination of medications without their consent. The victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 years old and, despite serious health problems, were not in immediate danger of death.
The prosecution believes the case could be far larger, as 76 additional incidents are being investigated involving the same doctor. According to reports, the 15 confirmed murders could represent only "the tip of the iceberg".
The authorities also suspect that the defendant in some cases attempted to destroy evidence by setting fires in the rooms where the deaths occurred. Shortly before his arrest in July 2024, the doctor is said to have killed two patients in a single day, according to the prosecution: a 75-year-old man in central Berlin and a 76-year-old woman in a nearby area. In the second case, he is said to have attempted to set the house on fire, though this failed.
During the approximately one-year trial, the doctor initially remained silent. However, last month he admitted in court to having "killed people" and claimed he believed he was freeing them from pain and disability. "I believed that this was best for everyone," he stated in his testimony.
Should the additional cases being reviewed by authorities be confirmed, this case could develop into one of the most serious serial murders in recent German history.
