A 39-year-old man threatened his neighbours with a kitchen knife in Karlsruhe-Neureut on Thursday and subsequently fled from police. The incident triggered a major operation lasting several hours.

At around 11:15 a.m., the man got into a dispute with his neighbours, according to police. During the altercation, he is said to have intimidated the neighbours both verbally and with a knife. He then barricaded himself in his flat. The officers suspected that he was in a state of psychological crisis and called in specialist units.

At around 14:40, the emergency responders gained access to the flat as they feared the man might possess other dangerous items. However, during the operation they discovered that the 39-year-old was no longer present.

A search is currently underway for the fugitive. Police could not say with certainty whether he is still armed. According to the authorities, however, he does not pose a significant threat.

The man's whereabouts remain unknown.
