The events began shortly before the shop closed around 22:00 local time. An employee of the store told German newspaper Bild that the man was at the checkout, refused to place his items on the conveyor belt, and suddenly drew a knife. He then took the woman hostage. Other staff members fled the building and called the police.
Special police units, rescue services and the fire brigade arrived at the scene. The building was cordoned off. A negotiation team made contact with the man and attempted to persuade him to surrender. Police spokesman Florian Nath explained that the man had made various impulsive demands that were difficult to understand and suggested no detailed plan.
In the morning, police decided to end the operation. The man was arrested in a special operation, during which a taser was used. The hostage was freed around 09:20. She was in a state of shock and received first aid from paramedics before being transported to hospital. The man sustained minor injuries during his arrest and was also taken to hospital. Nath confirmed that nobody was seriously injured.
The suspect's motive remains unclear. According to initial findings, the man and woman did not know each other. Police emphasised that residents faced no danger.
