A 51-year-old man shot and injured a police officer in western Dortmund on Tuesday afternoon and subsequently fled to an apartment, where he barricaded himself together with his three young daughters. Hours later, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, he surrendered to the emergency services.

The events began when police received an emergency call from a woman. Shortly afterwards, officers arrived at the scene. The suspect fired at a police officer before barricading himself in the apartment, according to news agency dpa, citing police.

Fortunately, the officer was not seriously injured. A bullet struck his protective vest and was deflected.

Special units of the German police and trained negotiators arrived and were ultimately able to resolve the crisis peacefully. Police emphasised that all three children were safe and were doing well under the circumstances.

The exact background and motives for the incident remain unclear. Investigations are ongoing.
