"We currently know that several people at the Welfen-Gymnasium have been injured. A suspect has been detained," police stated. They called on the public to avoid the area. The authorities initially provided no details about the type of attack or other aspects of the incident.
The number of affected people and the extent of the injuries remained unclear, it was reported. A support centre for families of secondary and senior school pupils has been established at a fire station in the city, which is less than 100 kilometres from Munich.
Germany has experienced several attacks on schools and public places over recent years that have traumatised the country. The most recent school incident occurred in September 2025, when a 17-year-old from Kosovo seriously injured a 45-year-old teacher in Essen. The perpetrator's motives were classified as jihadist. He also injured a man encountered randomly on the street and a primary school caretaker.
