Knife attack at Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau: two girls seriously injured

"We are assuming a perpetrator who was here with a knife and also a firearm," Herrmann said. Additionally, the 16-year-old had received psychiatric treatment in the past.
According to Herrmann, there were indications that the suspect could be a former pupil of the school — but this had not yet been confirmed. The youth held Croatian citizenship and most recently lived with his parents.
Whether the attacker knew the two seriously injured girls is unclear. Herrmann said there are currently no indications of a connection between perpetrator and victims. Investigators are examining whether the attack was targeted or random. The exact motive also remains unknown.
School with approximately 800 pupils
Welfen-Gymnasium is located in Schongau, a small town in southwestern Bavaria on the Lech river with around 12,000 residents, only a few hundred metres from the historic old town. According to the school's website, approximately 800 pupils are taught there by more than 80 teachers.
Whether the injured girls are themselves pupils of the grammar school was something police still had to clarify. A contact point for relatives and parents was set up at the fire service headquarters. Police initially provided no further information about the arrested youth.
