When the father called for help, the attacker dropped the knife and left the room. Police officers arrested him still in the apartment. The mother sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted by rescue helicopter to a clinic.
Investigators believe the suspect acted in a delusional state due to a mental illness. The investigating magistrate at Karlsruhe district court subsequently ordered his provisional admission to a psychiatric hospital. The criminal police have taken over further investigations.
