Knife attack in Ulm shopping centre: Trial against 30-year-old begins

As kurier.de reports, the trial against a 30-year-old accused of attempted murder begins next Tuesday before the Ulm Regional Court. The attack on a 25-year-old employee of an electronics specialist store in a Ulm shopping centre occurred approximately six months ago.
According to the indictment, the defendant allegedly obtained the knife specifically for the deed. He is said to have stabbed the employee deliberately and repeatedly with it – even after the victim was already defenceless on the ground. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and had to undergo emergency surgery multiple times. Two colleagues who came to the injured man's aid were slightly injured.
The public prosecutor's office believes the defendant acted out of anger and frustration. The perpetrator and victim did not know each other.
After the deed, the 30-year-old fled the shop. Police officers apprehended him shortly afterwards, but as he did not put down the knife according to police statements and instead attacked the officers, he was shot and seriously wounded. He has been in investigative custody since January.
He has not commented on the matter so far, as the public prosecutor's office stated. The man is from Eritrea and was, according to earlier statements by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Migration, subject to deportation, but could not be deported.
Six trial days are scheduled for the proceedings. A verdict is expected at the earliest in mid-August.
