Knife attack in Trier: 22-year-old student killed
On Wednesday, 15 July 2026, a 22-year-old student at the University of Trier fell victim to a fatal attack with a stabbing weapon. The attack took place on Robert-Schuman-Allee, near Campus II.
A man of the same age is believed to have attacked the victim. Paramedics who arrived at the scene failed in their attempts to resuscitate him. Several people present witnessed the attack, as it took place in the middle of the street in broad daylight.
The alleged attacker initially fled the scene, but officers were able to apprehend him after a brief search. According to police information, the arrested man is an Afghan national. He remains in custody. A spokesman for the investigating authorities stated that evidence and statements would have to be examined before a decision on remand could be made.
The authorities set up a care facility on Robert-Schuman-Allee for witnesses and family members. Emergency pastoral care workers assisted those who witnessed the attack. The area was cordoned off over a wide radius. According to police, there was no further danger to pedestrians after the arrest.
The University of Trier confirmed that the deceased was one of its students. A black banner with the inscription "The university community is in mourning" appeared on its website. A minute of silence was scheduled for Thursday midday. In a statement, the university said: "Such an event deeply shakes us as a community. The loss of a young person leaves a painful void."
The State Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation. The investigators initially made no comment on the background to the attack. Witness information on this is currently being evaluated.
