An Afghan man was sentenced on Thursday by the Munich court to life imprisonment for a fatal car attack. The verdict includes two counts of murder, 23 counts of attempted murder and 22 cases of bodily harm, of which 19 were aggravated.
The 25-year-old drove a vehicle into a crowd of people in Munich in February of last year. A two-year-old girl and her mother were killed. Numerous other people were injured, including children, according to Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter.
The perpetrator had come to Germany at the age of 15 and had applied for asylum. Although his application was rejected, he possessed a residence permit. He previously worked as a security officer.
The prosecution assumes a religious motive. According to court statements, the man did not belong to an extremist group but had radicalised himself through watching radical sermons on the internet.
