Specialist police units arrest neighbour following suspected attempted homicide

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, specialist police units in Hattingen (North Rhine-Westphalia) have arrested a man suspected of launching a life-threatening attack on his 61-year-old neighbour. According to a police spokesperson, the suspect stepped out in front of the neighbouring house and allowed himself to be arrested without resistance.

The 61-year-old was discovered seriously injured outside a residential building at approximately 15:20. Emergency personnel treated him on site; he was subsequently airlifted by rescue helicopter to a specialist clinic. There had been a period when his life was in danger.

The Essen public prosecutor's office and the Hagen police are jointly proceeding on the assumption of attempted homicide. A murder squad has taken over the investigation. The authorities initially made no statement regarding the exact injuries sustained by the victim or the possible murder weapon.

The area around the discovery site was cordoned off for forensic evidence collection. Whether this was also the scene of the crime remained unclear at the time of reporting. Police declined to comment on reports that an axe attack was allegedly involved, citing investigative reasons. The Essen public prosecutor's office is continuing the investigation.
