In the Saxon state capital of Dresden, police shot a 41-year-old man from Turkey on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred in Friedrichstadt, a district to the west of the city centre, at the corner of Menageriestraße and Berliner Straße.
The man pointed a firearm resembling a musket at pedestrians. Witnesses subsequently alerted the emergency call centre. Police immediately dispatched officers to the scene, including specialist units for life-threatening situations (LebEL).
Before the officers arrived, the man entered a shopping centre and later left it again. When police arrived, he was already standing in front of the building and opened fire on the officers. The officers returned fire and wounded the man.
According to police, the suspected perpetrator called out an "Islamic religious phrase". The regional newspaper Sächsische Zeitung reported that a video from the scene captured the cry "Allahu Akhbar".
Police arrested the 41-year-old and took him to a hospital. He is being investigated for threats and violations of weapons laws. The motive for his actions remains unclear. No one other than the attacker was injured.
