Police in Kiel are conducting an extensive operation to secure DNA samples from residents of a high-rise building. The background is an incident in early June, when an unknown person threw a paving stone at a patrol car.
The stone smashed through the windscreen of the vehicle and injured a police officer who was sitting in the passenger seat, causing injuries to her hand and ankle. The public prosecutor's office classifies the incident as attempted manslaughter.
The operation is taking place in the Mettenhof district. Samples are being taken from all residents of the 25-storey building who were at least 14 years old at the time of the incident. The incident occurred during the night of 1–2 June.
A police spokeswoman stated that the injured officer was temporarily unable to work but can now resume her duties. Traces on the stone are intended to help identify the perpetrator. At the request of the public prosecutor's office, Kiel District Court ordered the DNA investigations. Hundreds of officers are involved in securing the material.
