A man with dual Romanian and Moldovan citizenship was taken into pre-trial detention in Germany at the end of June. Authorities in the state of Baden-Württemberg are charging him with attempting to establish a far-right terror group. This is according to a statement from the Romanian General Inspectorate of Police (IGPR), published by Agerpres.
According to the investigation, the suspect had been active since 2023. His goal was allegedly to establish an organisation that would unleash a "terror war" on Romanian territory and overthrow the constitutional order. Evidence indicates that the suspect operated two encrypted communication channels from Germany. Through these platforms, he is said to have primarily recruited young Romanian citizens.
Furthermore, he is alleged to have incited members to commit serious crimes. These allegedly included arson attacks on buildings used by migrants and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The Romanian authorities initiated the establishment of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) between Romania and Germany through Eurojust. This cooperation facilitated operational coordination, rapid evidence exchange, and the resolution of cross-border legal and evidentiary matters throughout the investigation.
On 30 June, the German judicial authorities ordered the provisional arrest of the suspect. They received support from officers of the Romanian Directorate for Combating Organised Crime as well as prosecutors from the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism Offences – Central Unit. Eurojust also participated in the measure.
International police cooperation ultimately led to the ordering of pre-trial detention for the man in Germany.
