Sabotage at Munich arms firm and power grid: authorities suspect Russia

Arson attacks on substations in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony as well as an attack on a Munich arms company alarm Germany. Authorities suspect Russia as the driving force.

Series of attacks on infrastructure and defence industry shakes Germany

As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, several arson attacks on defence companies and the power grid have put Germany on high alert. Within days, authorities in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony registered a series of attacks on substations and power lines — with the stated aim of triggering large-scale blackouts.

In Munich, two perpetrators attacked the headquarters of an arms company with incendiary devices during the night of Thursday. On Friday evening, police in North Rhine-Westphalia secured the vehicle of a man suspected of involvement in several of the recent sabotage actions against the power grid.

Following the attempted attack in Leipzig, investigators have identified Russia as the suspected driving force. The investigations took as long as they did until the authorities could draw this conclusion on a sound basis, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Behind this lies a clear message to Moscow — coupled with the aim of not further alarming the population.

Politicians are responding with calls for improved protection of critical infrastructure. The question of financing remains open.
