Shooting in Hamburg-St. Pauli: At least two dead on factory premises

Shots were fired on a factory premises on Lagerstraße in Hamburg's St. Pauli district on Tuesday evening. According to hasepost.de, citing information from Bild newspaper, at least two men were fatally struck. Hamburg police initially did not officially confirm the number of victims. Further persons are said to have been injured.
One of the men was unable to leave the building, dying inside the building complex. A second man succumbed to his injuries in an ambulance, according to Bild newspaper. Investigators initially made no confirmed statements about any additional injured persons.
Police arrived with a large contingent and heavily armed response units. The area around Lagerstraße was cordoned off widely, with numerous patrol cars deployed. Ambulances and emergency doctors were also on site. Authorities deployed drones to clarify the situation from the air. Federal police also supported the operation.
Whether armed persons remained on the premises at the time of the cordoning-off remained initially unclear. Response units searched the complex. Hamburg police stated that there was currently no danger to residents.
Investigators remained tight-lipped regarding the background, possible motive and possible suspects. A large-scale manhunt was launched in the surrounding area.
The building complex houses several companies, including the Universum Boxing gym and meat processor Delta Fleisch Hamburg. Whether one of the companies was directly connected to the incident was initially unknown.
The incident has gained particular significance due to a previous incident on the same premises: at the end of June, unknown persons threw a hand grenade over a stone wall onto the business premises from Lagerstraße. The explosive device detonated and damaged a building as well as several vehicles. No one was injured at that time. Hamburg police subsequently conducted a public manhunt for the perpetrator or perpetrators.
Whether there is a connection between the hand grenade attack and the shooting on Tuesday evening remains entirely open according to investigators.
Hamburg police confirmed late in the evening that the operation on Lagerstraße was continuing. Further official information was expected over the course of the night or Wednesday morning.
