Shock call in Dorf Mecklenburg: senior defrauded of five-figure sum
As reported by Google News DE — Crime (de), unknown perpetrators defrauded a 92-year-old man in Dorf Mecklenburg (north-west Mecklenburg) of a five-figure sum in cash through a fraudulent telephone call. The perpetrators told the pensioner on the phone that his son had caused a fatal traffic accident and needed bail money to be released from police custody.
Subsequently, an unknown person appeared at the man's home address and collected the cash, according to police.
The authorities are explicitly warning against this scheme. "In so-called shock calls, perpetrators place their victims under time pressure with fictitious emergencies," the force explained. The callers could pose as relatives, police officers, prosecutors, judges or other officials and change their roles during the conversation.
Anyone who is asked by telephone to pay alleged bail and to hand over cash or valuables to an unknown person should hang up immediately, police say. "Neither the police nor the prosecutor's office or court will come to your home to collect cash or valuables."
